hUMOR For November 16th

********************************
No matter how hard my mom tries, every plant or flower she has attempted to grow seems to wither and die an untimely death under her care. But she never gives up hope.

While she was visiting home recently, my sister nudged me and pointed to a line of new plants placed by the kitchen window. "Look," she whispered, "death row."

Thanks to WW: Paul Harvey: Why there's no flu vaccine.

The major pharmaceutical companies in the US provided almost 90% of the nations flu vaccine at one time.
They did this despite a very low profit margin for the product. Basically, they were doing us a favor. In the late 80's a man from North Carolina who had received the vaccine got the flu.

The strain he caught was one of the strains in that years vaccine made by a US company. What did he do? He sued and he won. He was awarded almost $5 million!
After that case was appealed and lost, most US pharmaceutical companies stopped making the vaccine.
The liability out weighed the profit margin.

Since UK and Canadian laws prohibit such frivolous law suits UK and Canadian companies began selling the vaccine in the US.

By the way...the lawyer that represented the man in the flu shot law suit was a young ambulance chaser by the name of John Edwards. .......and now you know the rest of the story.

Thanks to my friend, LM in AR: This pretty much covers it!

Happy moments, praise God.
Difficult moments, seek God.
Quiet moments, worship God.
Painful moments, trust God.
Every moment, thank God

Thanks to marti -- JESUS LOVES ME

Jesus loves me, this I know,
Though my hair is white as snow.
Though my sight is growing dim,
Still He bids me trust in Him.

(CHORUS)

YES, JESUS LOVES ME... YES, JESUS LOVES ME...
YES, JESUS LOVES ME FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO.

Though my steps are oh, so slow,
With my hand in His I'll go.
On through life, let come what may
He'll be there to lead the way.

CHORUS)

Though I am no longer young,
I have much which He's begun.
Let me serve Christ with a smile,
Go with others the extra mile.

When the nights are dark and long,
In my heart He puts a song.
Telling me in words so clear,
"Have no fear, for I am near."

(CHORUS)

When my work on earth is done,
And life's victories have been won.
He will take me home above,
Then I'll understand His love.

(CHORUS)

I love Jesus, does he know?
Have I ever told Him so?
Jesus loves to hear me say,
That I love Him every day.

If you think this is neat, please pass it on to all of your friends.

If you do not pass it on, nothing bad will happen, but you will have missed an opportunity to "Reach out and Touch" a friend or a loved one.

God Bless Us All !!!

Thanks again to C.J. -- HE PACKED A LIBRARY

A story was told of a young man who was preparing to take a long trip. He told his friend, "I am just about packed I have to put in: a guide book, a mirror, a microscope, a lamp, a telescope, volume of fine poetry, a package of old letters, a few biographies, a book of psalms, a sword, a hammer, a set of books I've been studying."

You can't get all that in your bag said his friend.
"Oh! yes, I can he replied," and with that he placed his Bible in the corner of his suit case and closed the lid. --Unknown

From LameJokes -- A Dirty Trick

A guy walks into a post office one day to see a middle-aged, balding man standing at the counter methodically placing "Love" stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and starts spraying scent all over them.
His curiosity getting the better of him, so he goes up to the balding man and asks him what he is doing.

The man says, "I'm sending out 1,000 Valentine cards signed, 'Guess who?'"

"But why?" asks the man.

"I'm a divorce lawyer..."

Hesitant Driver

A hesitant driver, waiting for a traffic jam to clear, came to a complete
stop on the freeway on-ramp.

The traffic thinned, but the driver still waited. Finally a furious voice
from the vehicle behind him cried, "Hey, fellow! The sign says 'Yield,' not 'surrender!'"

Two elderly couples were enjoying friendly conversation when one of the men asked the other, "Fred, how was the memory clinic you went to last month?"

"Outstanding," Fred replied. "They taught us all the latest psychological techniques: visualization, association, etc. It was great."

"That's great! And what was the name of the clinic?"

Fred went blank. He thought and thought, but couldn't remember. Then a smile broke across his face and he asked, "What do you call that flower with the long stem and thorns?"

"You mean a rose?"

"Yes, that's it!"

He turned to his wife, "Rose, what was the name of that memory clinic?"

Attending Church

A little boy was attending his first wedding. After the service, his cousin asked him, "How many women can a man marry?

"Sixteen," the boy responded. His cousin was amazed that he knew the answer so quickly. "How do you know that?"

"Easy," the little boy said. "All you have to do is add it up, like the Bishop said: 4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4 poorer."

Terri asked her Sunday School class to draw pictures of their favorite Bible stories. She was puzzled by Kyle's picture, which showed four people on an airplane, so she asked him which story it was meant to represent.

"Oh, that's

Pontius-the Pilot.

A college drama group presented a play in which one character would stand on a trapdoor and announce, "I descend into hell!"

A stagehand below would then pull a rope, the trapdoor would open, and the character would plunge through.
The play was well received. When the actor playing the part became ill, another actor who was quite overweight took his place. When the new actor announced, "I descend into hell!" the stagehand pulled the rope, and the actor began his plunge, but became hopelessly stuck. No amount of tugging on the rope could make him descend.

One student in the balcony jumped up and yelled:
"Hallelujah! Hell is full!"

Some years ago, Michael J. Flanagan, a successful New York contractor, was standing on the deck of the Staten Island Ferry when a car got loose and sent him into the river.

The following Sunday his widow, all dressed in black, was standing on the church steps after the funeral, receiving condolences, when an old friend of the contractor came up.

"I'm sorry, Mary, for your loss," offered the friend.
"Did Mike leave you well fixed?"

"Oh, he did!" she said. "He left me almost a half million dollars."

"Well now, that's not bad for a man who couldn't read or write."

Thanks to LBS for a thoughtful one... Manly joke

A group of girlfriends go on vacation and they see a new five-story hotel with a sign that reads "For Women Only." Since they are without their boyfriends, they decide to go in. A very attractive guy at the front desk explains how the hotel works..... "We have 5 floors. Go up floor-by-floor and once you find what you are looking for, you can stay there. It's easy to decide, since each floor has a sign telling you what's inside the rooms."

So they start going up and on the 1st floor the sign reads "All the men here are horrible lovers, but they are sensitive and kind." The friends laugh and without hesitation move on to the next floor.

The sign on the 2nd floor reads "All the men here are wonderful lovers, but they generally treat women badly." This certainly wasn't going to do!

The friends move up to the 3rd floor where the sign read "All the men here are great lovers and sensitive to the needs of women." They agree that this is good, but there are still 2 more floors! They move on to the 4th floor.

On the 4th floor the sign was perfect: "All the men here have perfect builds and are sensitive and attentive to women. They are perfect lovers. They are also single, loyal, rich and straight."

The women seem pleased but they all decide that they would rather see what the 5th floor has to offer before they settle for the 4th.

The women reach the 5th floor but find that there is only a lobby with a sign that reads: "There are no rooms or any men here. This floor was built to prove that there is simply no way to please a woman."

An elderly couple were killed in an accident and found themselves being given a tour of heaven by Saint Peter.

"Here is your ocean-side condo, over there are the tennis courts, swimming pool, and two golf courses. If you need any refreshments, just stop by any of the many bars located throughout the area."

"Heck, Gloria," the old man hissed when Saint Peter walked off, "we could have been here ten years ago if you hadn't heard about all that stupid oat bran, wheat germ, and low-fat diets!"

Thanks to LBS: If.....

If you can start the day without caffeine,

if you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,

if you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,

if you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,

if you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you

any time,

if you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you when,

though no fault of yours, something goes wrong,

if you can take criticism and blame without resentment,

if you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,

if you can face the world without lies and deceit,

if you can conquer tension without medical help,

if you can relax without liquor,

if you can sleep without the aid of drugs,

if you can honestly say that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed, color, religion, gender preference, or politics, THEN, you have reached the same level of development as your dog.

Working in the antique trade, I'm always on the lookout for good merchandise.

One afternoon in a neighboring town, I happened upon a small back street garage, and I could see a collection of fine silver laid out on tables.

Hopping out of the car, I began examining some candlesticks.

One of the men approached me and asked if he could help.

"This is a Garage Sale, isn't it?" I asked.

"No ma'am," he replied........."This is a Police Raid."

From a friend: No Enemies

A new minister was talking to the oldest member of his congregation. "I am 90 years old, sir, and I haven't an enemy in the world," said the aged one. "That is a beautiful thought," said the minister approvingly.
"Yes sir," was the answer. "I'm thankful to say that I've outlived 'em all."

From a friend: How Do You Spell That?

It was the beginning of term at a primary school in Brooklyn. The teacher asked the children their names one at a time, and for each to spell their name out loud. When she came to a young Pakastani boy and asked his name..... "Ravashanka Vankatarataam Bannerjee" he replied. "How do you spell that? asked the teacher. "My mother helps me" said the little boy.

******************************************************

From a friend: Parenting

Is there a magic cutoff period when offspring become accountable for their own actions? Is there a wonderful moment when parents can become detached spectators in the lives of their children and shrug, "It's their life," and feel nothing?

When I was in my twenties, I stood in a hospital corridor waiting for doctors to put a few stitches in my son's head. I asked, "When do you stop worrying?" A nurse said, "When they get out of the accident stage."

My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing.

When I was in my thirties, I sat on a little chair in a classroom and heard how one of my children talked incessantly, disrupted the class, and was headed for a career making license plates. As if to read my mind, a teacher said, "Don't worry. They all go through this stage, and then you can sit back, relax, and enjoy them." My mother listened and said nothing.

When I was in my forties, I spent a lifetime waiting for the phone to ring, the cars to come home, the front door to open. A friend said, "They're trying to find themselves. In a few years, you can stop worrying. They'll be adults."

By the time I was 50, I was sick and tired of being vulnerable, I was still worrying over my children, but there was a new wrinkle. There was nothing I could do about it.

But I continued to anguish over their failures, be tormented by their frustrations and absorbed in their disappointments. My friends said that when my kids got married I could stop worrying and lead my own life. I wanted to believe that, but I was haunted by my mother's wan smile and her occasional, "You look pale.
Are you all right?" "Call me the minute you get home."
" Are you depressed about something?"

Can it be that parents are sentenced to a lifetime of worry? Is concern for one another handed down like a torch to blaze the trail of human frailties and the fears of the unknown? Is concern a curse? Or is it a virtue that elevates us to the highest form of life?
One of my children became quite irritable recently, saying to me, "Where were you? I've been calling for three days, and no one answered. I was worried." I smiled a wan smile.
The torch has been passed.

Rebecca was the wealthy wife of a very successful businessman. One day, she decided to have her portrait painted as a gift to her husband. When she arrived at the artist's studio for her first sitting, Rebecca immediately explained to him exactly what she wanted.
"You should paint me like I am. These little wrinkles, you put them on your canvas. The lines under my eyes, the flab on my arms, the turn in my nose, and the mole on my cheek, they all stay. BUT on my hands you put lots of rings with big diamonds and emeralds and bright jewels. Around my neck you put chains of gold and diamonds. Do you understand?"
The artist looked at Rebecca in earnest and asked why she should want such detail of real life in her physical appearance, but adorn herself with the phoney jewelry.
Rebecca replied, "When I die, I know my husband will quickly re-marry. When he does, his new wife will go crazy looking for the jewels".

CLASSIC VERSION:
The ant works hard all summer building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The grasshopper thinks he's a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.
Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter so he dies out in the wet cold.

-----------------------------------------------------

MODERN VERSION:
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The grasshopper thinks he's a fool and laughs and dances and lays the summer away. Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving.
CBS, NBC and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.
America is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?
Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper, and everybody cries when they sing "It's Not Easy Being Green."
Jesse Jackson stages a demonstration in front of the ant's house where the news stations film the group singing "We shall overcome".
Jesse then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper's sake.
Al Gore exclaims in an interview with Peter Jennings that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and calls for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his "fair share." Finally, the EEOC drafts the "Economic Equity and Anti-Grasshopper Act", retroactive to the beginning of the summer.
The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government.
Hillary gets her old law firm to represent the grasshopper in a defamation suit against the ant, and the case is tried before a panel of federal judges that Bill appointed from a list of single-parent welfare recipients. The ant loses the case.
The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ant's food while the government house he is in, which just happens to be the ant's old house, crumbles around him because he doesn't maintain it. The ant has disappeared in the snow.
The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.

Thanks to JLH: FOOLISH QUESTIONS

The following is a "top ten" list of silliest questions asked on a cruise ship. They were collected in 1998 by Paul Grayson, cruise director for the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line.

10. Do these steps go up or down?
9. What do you do with the beautiful ice carvings after they melt?
8. Which elevator do I take to get to the front of the ship?
7. Does the crew sleep on the ship?
6. Is this island completely surrounded by water?
5. Does the ship make its own electricity?
4. Is it salt water in the toilets?
3. What elevation are we at?
2. There's a photographer on board who takes photos and displays them the next day. The question asked:
If the pictures aren't marked, how will I know which ones are mine?
1. What time is the Midnight Buffet being served?

An old country farmer with serious financial problems bought a donkey from another old farmer for $100, who agreed to deliver the mule the next day. However, the next day he drove up and said, "Sorry, but I have some bad news: The donkey died." "Well, then, just give me my money back."

"Can't do that. I went and spent it already."

"OK, then. Just unload the donkey."

"What ya gonna do with a dead donkey?"

"I'm going to raffle him off."

"You can't raffle off a dead donkey!"

"Sure I can. I just won't tell anybody he's dead."

A month later the two met up and the farmer who sold the donkey asked, "Whatever happened with that dead donkey?"

"I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at $2 a piece
and made a profit of $898." "Didn't anyone
complain?"

"Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back."

From a friend: Flying Chips

I was inspecting communications facilities in Alaska.
Since I had little experience in flying in small planes, I was nervous when we approached a landing strip in a snow-covered area. The pilot descended to just a couple hundred feet, then gunned both engines, climbed, and circled back. While my heart pounded, the passenger beside me seemed calm. "I wonder why he didn't land," I said.

"He was checking to see if the landing strip was plowed," the man said.

As we made a second approach, I glanced out the window. "It looks plowed to me," I commented.

"No," my seatmate said. "It hasn't been cleared for some time."

"How can you tell?"

"Because," the man informed me, "I'm the guy who drives the plow."

GCF: New Wine

There are many "pinot" wines on the market: Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and
Pinot Grigio are but a few.

There is also marketing research on a product for senior citizens from a
new hybrid grape that acts as a diuretic and will reduce the number of
trips an older man has to make to the bathroom during the night.

They will be marketing the new wine as .... Pinot More.

Former president Clinton noticed a group of boys surrounding a dog. Concerned lest the boys were hurting the dog, he went over and asked, "What are you doing with that dog?"
One of the boys replied, "This dog is a neighborhood stray. We all want him, but only one of us can take him home. So we've decided that whichever one of us can tell the biggest lie will get to keep the dog."

Of course, the president was taken aback. "You boys shouldn't be having a contest telling lies!" he exclaimed. He then launched into a ten minute sermon against lying, beginning, "Don't you boys know it's a sin to lie," and ending with, "Why, when I was your age, I never told a lie."

There was dead silence for about a minute. Just as the president was beginning to think he'd gotten through to them, the smallest boy gave a deep sigh and said, "All right, give him the dog.

Thanks to CRJ in The SUSQUEHANNA SENTINEL: SHE KNEW TOO MUCH BIBLE

A little girl was invited by a priest to attend religious instruction. She refused, saying it would be against her father’s wishes. The priest said that since he was a religious instructor, she should obey him, not her father. "Oh, Sir," she replied, "We are taught in the Bible to ‘Honor thy father and thy mother."

"But I am your spiritual Father," said to priest -- to which she replied, "No. The Bible says, ‘Call no man your father upon the earth for one is your Father, which is in heaven.’"

The priest was not anxious to lose a religious discussion to one so young. He said, "You have no business reading the Bible."

"But," she replied, "Then why did Jesus say, ‘Search the Scriptures’?" He answered, "But that command is only to the clergy. Surely you know that a little child cannot understand the Scriptures." "Then why,"
she asked, "did Paul say to Timothy: ‘From a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures’?"

Surely there was some way to get the best of this young upstart. Said the priest, "Timothy was being trained to be a bishop and he was taught by the church authorities." "No, sir," said the little girl. "He had been taught by his mother and his grandmother. At least, that’s what Paul said."

The priest turned away and someone said they heard him mutter, "She knows enough Bible to poison a whole parish." --author unknown (Adapted from The Key Word, Memphis, Tennessee)

Customer Guide to Supermarket Checkout

1. When in the express lane, make sure that all items are rung up and
bagged before you start looking for your checkbook. Then, after you make a
futile search for your pen, borrow one from the clerk and make sure your
checkbook is balanced before giving up the check.

2. Never get into the 10-Items-or-Less line with less than 12 items. IT'S
THE LAW!!!

3. When in the 10-Items-or-Less line and you have your 12 to 20 items,
always ask the clerk if it's okay. That way, if he says "yes," then the
people behind you will get mad at HIM, not you. If he says "no," then YOU
can get mad at him. Either way, you win!

4. Save all your pennies and dump them in the bottom of your purse so that
when you are in the express lane you won't be embarrassed by spending all
that time looking for one and not finding any.

5. When asked if you want paper or plastic, take all the time you need to
make the right decision. Don't be rushed. Get it right. If you're not sure
just say, "BAG." That way they will have to ask you again, giving you more
time to decide. You may want to practice this at home in case you are ever
asked this question at a grocery store.

6. Always, and I repeat, ALWAYS tell the checker your reason for choosing
paper or plastic. Checkers by nature are very curious and if you should
fail to give them your reason for choosing paper over plastic, the clerk is
liable to lie awake at night wondering why you didn't choose plastic.

7. Always keep this in mind: If something is heavy and you don't want to
lift it out of the basket and put it on the belt. Don't fret whether the
checker will automatically know the price. After all, everyone knows how
smart those clerks are.

8. Since everyone knows how ignorant those clerks are, you must always
remember to tell them to not put the eggs and bread in the bottom of the bag.

9. Feel free to ask your clerk anything you may want to know. All checkers
are experts on how to prepare whatever meal you should decide to make that
night. They can give you precise directions to anywhere in the state you
might want to go. They can tell you the best restaurant around, the kind of
wine you will like best or anything else you may need to know about life.
After all, everyone knows how smart those clerks are.

10. Don't forget rule NO. 8

11. After waiting in the checkout line for several minutes and it's finally
your turn at the counter, be sure to tell the clerk that more help is
needed. He will certainly ensure that there is plenty of help next time.

12. When the clerk greets you and asks how you're doing, don't feel
pressured into answering him. After all the clerk has to be polite -- but
you don't have to.

13. When the store is not busy and there is only one check-stand with a
light on, be sure to ask the nearest clerk which check stand is open. You
don't want to take a chance being tricked into the wrong one.

14. If the clerk asks you if you know the price of an item and you don't,
tell him it's "2-something" or "3-something." The clerks love that because
they don't get to use their SOMETHING keys very often.

We had our ten-year-old daughter late in life, long after our two boys were born. She is the joy of my husband's life, but he is self-conscious about being an older father. He likes to jokingly tell people that by the time she graduates from high school, he'll be in a nursing home.
One day she asked, "Mom, you know how Dad always says he'll be in a home when I graduate?"
I nodded, expecting some sad question about mortality.
She continued, "Can I have the car then?"

As Long as the Boss is Happy

Big defense contractor buys a small company, and the small company gets a
new IT boss just as work starts to integrate systems with the big outfit's
infrastructure, reports a technician on the scene.

And though the new boss has no computer skills or knowledge, she's still
the source of a steady stream of instructions for renovating the data center.

"This initially included installing a window into the data center," says
the technician. "She wanted to be able to see into it as she walked in
every morning and at every smoke break."

"It seemed strange, but I was happy if that meant I could keep her from
actually coming into the data center and possibly destroying something."

A week or two later, the boss tells the technician to install track
lighting over each row of servers lining the room. Then she requests dimmer
switches to control the track lighting.

"Weird assignments kept rolling in -- knock out a wall here, paint a wall
there, change the colors of the electrical outlet covers -- while I labored
with co-workers to get the real work done," he says. "Meanwhile, I endured
daily meetings with corporate managers to describe and explain any and all
progress made from the previous day's labors."

Then comes a major project: replacing the aging network switches. "The
Friday before we began, I let the boss know what we had assigned to us,"
says the technician. "She nearly had a cow. She immediately started calling
everyone she knew at company headquarters, ranting and raving that this
would be way too disruptive to the users and cause general havoc."

The project is pushed back two weeks, but then rescheduled. That Friday,
the boss tells the technical staff not to make any changes, no matter what.

"It was then that I finally got the real reason for why she wanted the
blinking switches to stay. She loved walking by several times a day and
looking through the window in the data center to see the pretty green
blinking lights. "That made her feel everything inside the data center was
working well. The green activity lights let her know there were no
problems, or they would have started blinking amber or red."

After our little talk, I spoke with the corporate folks and was told in no
uncertain terms that if this project wasn't done that weekend, I would face
serious consequences. I told them not to worry. It would be done by Monday
morning.

Over the weekend, the tech and a co-worker make the changes and remove the
switches. But they leave the old switch racks in place. "We installed
random-blinking green Christmas lights where the switches used to sit
behind the smoked glass doors," he says.

"To this day, my boss still thinks she won the battle to keep the blinking
switches in place."

Okinawa, clawed my way up the blood-soaked sand, and eventually took out an
entire enemy machine gun nest with a single grenade.

"As a sergeant, I fought in Korea. We pushed back the enemy inch by bloody
inch all the way up to the Chinese border, always under a barrage of
artillery and small arms fire.

"Finally, as a gunny sergeant, I did three consecutive combat tours in
Vietnam. We humped through the mud and razorgrass for 14 hours a day,
plagued by rain and mosquitoes, ducking under sniper fire all day and
mortar fire all night. In a firefight, we'd fire until our arms ached and
our guns were empty, then we'd charge the enemy with bayonets!"

"Ah," said the Sailor with a dismissive wave of his hand, "all shore duty,
huh?"

And the guy says, "Really? What's going to happen?"

And Bush says, "Well, we're going to kill 140 million Iranians this time and one bicycle repairman."

And the guy exclaimed, "A bicycle repairman?!!!"

So Bush turns to Powell and says, " See, I told you no one would worry about the 140 million Iranians!"

A woman went to the local psychic in hopes of contacting her dearly departed grandmother.

The psychic's eyelids fluttered and she began moaning.
Eventually, a voice came, saying, "Granddaughter are you there?"

The granddaughter, wide-eyed responded, "Grandma is that you?"

"Yes granddaughter, it's me."

"It's really you, Grandma?" the woman repeated.

"Yes, it's really me, granddaughter."

The woman paused, "Grandma, I have just one question for you."

"Anything, my child."

"When did you learn to speak English?"

Thanks to D.O. -- WATCHING LIFE PASS BY -- Wilkin Tom O'Neal

A little boy was asked what his father did by an older man. The boy answered, "He watches." "You mean he is a night watchman?"

"Oh no", the little boy exclaimed, "He just watches."

"Well, what does he watch?"

"I don't know if I can tell you everything, but I can name a few things."

"Well, tell me," the curious man replied.

"He watches TV, he watches Mom do the housework, he watches for the mail man, he watches the weather, he watches the computer, and I think he watches girls, too" he said with an impish grin on his face. "He watches the stock market, football games. He watches Mom spank us, and he watches us do our homework. He watches us leave to go to Church and PTA and shopping.
He watches Mom write letters and me play with my dog.
He watches Mom pay the bills. But mainly, he just watches."

There are many who idly sit and watch life pass them by in the church today. They live lives for which their is no meaning, no significance. If this is characteristic of your life, the Apostle Paul offers a challenge to each of us when he penned to Timothy, "
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses" (1 Timothy 6:12).

James had said also, "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves" (James 1:22).

DON'T BE DECEIVED BY WATCHING AND LOOKING. BE DOERS!

From a friend -- Blonde Chips

There was this blonde farmer who had these two horses that she couldn't tell apart. She went to her neighbour and asked if he had any ideas to help her.

The neighbor told her to trim part of one horse's tails so one would be shorter than the other. The blonde thanked her neighbor and went home.

She trimmed one of the tails, and she could tell her horses apart now, until one day when the other horse got his tail caught in the fence.

Now the blonde had a problem because she couldn't tell the horses apart again. So she went back to her neighbor and asked him what she could do. Her neighbor said to trim one of the horse's ears.

The blonde thanked her neighbor again and went home.
Then she trimmed one of her horse's ears. Now she could tell them apart. Until one day when the other horse got its ear caught in the fence. Now the blonde was stuck. So she went back to her neighbor. Her neighbor suggested that she measure her horses.

The blonde thanked her neighbor once again and went home. It turns out that the black horse is two inches taller than the white horse...

The second man replied, "You don't understand, I make $100,000 a week."

The first man looked at him quite dumbfounded and asked, "What difference does that make?! We're on an island with no food and no water! We're going to DIE!"

The second man answered, "You just don't get it. I make $100,000 a week, and I tithe ten percent on that $100,000 a week. My preacher will find me!

From a Baptist Preacher (of course...)

Three ministers were sitting in a retirement home discussing religion; a Baptist, a Methodist and a Presbyterian. They start talking about religions other than their own that they admired the most.

The Presbyterian Minister said, "I've always admired the Catholics, with their formality, the architecture, the Latin and the grandeur of Mass. I think if I had not been a Presbyterian, I might have been a Catholic."

The Methodist Minister chimed in and said, "I've always admired the Amish, with their simple approach to life, their closeness to God and the land. If I hadn't been a Methodist, I think I would have like to have been Amish."

The two then turned to their Baptist Brother who had
suddenly become very quiet. One of them asked, "Well
Brother, if you hadn't been a Baptist, what would you have been?"
His one word reply, "Ashamed."

Are you serious? I think your face is adorable. And you could easily get one of those layer cuts that would look so cute I think. I was actually going to do that except that I was afraid it would accent my long neck.
Oh, that's funny! I would love to have your neck! Anything to take attention away from this two-by-four I have for a shoulder line.
Are you kidding? I know girls that would love to have your shoulders.Everything drapes so well on you. I mean, look at my arms. See how short they are? If I had your shoulders I could get clothes to fit me so much easier.

Checks and balances

At the computer store where this clerk works, many of the suppliers insist
on being paid C.O.D. So it's no surprise when the delivery truck driver
asks for a check.

But there's a problem. "One of our suppliers installed an automated
shipping system that printed the labels for the delivery company," he says.
"They tied the system to their accounts receivable so that any prior
balance would be added to the C.O.D. amount of any current order.

"Trouble was, we had just returned a defective shipment and had a credit
balance. Our next order was for less money than the credit balance. The
system dutifully looked up our balance and printed the C.O.D. tag."

For -$38.47.

Which leaves the clerk and the driver scratching their heads. The driver
knows he can't hand over the shipment without a check. But a check for a
negative amount makes no sense.

"I called my bank and asked what would happen if I wrote a check for
-$34.87," says the clerk. "The branch manager laughed and said it wouldn't
go through their system, so go ahead. I wrote the check, gave it to the
driver and he left."

Then the phone rang. The bank manager had checked with his IT people and
they told him the bank would deposit $38.47 in my account when the check
was processed. They were in a panic!

Fortunately, the delivery company tore up the check when the driver checked in.

I wonder how much the bank spent making sure their software would no longer
accept a negative amount on a check.

From a friend (edited) -- Critic's Corner

by Charles Lowery

The congregation was not certain that the new preacher could do all that the previous, older preacher had done. The Preacher Search Committee decided to put him to the test. After services, everyone went out to the local lake for a picnic. After loading all of the picnic supplies into a large boat, the congregation climbed aboard and began to cross the lake to an island. Halfway across the lake a member stood up and said, "Oh no, we have forgotten the hot dogs. Someone will have to swim back and get them." Realizing he was being put to the test, the new preacher got out of the boat, walked across the water, and retrieved the hot dogs. Most of the congregation was stunned but one critic said, "See, I told you, that preacher is no good -- he can't even swim."

Critics are everywhere. They sit so far back in the church, by the time they hear it, it's already a rumor. They weren't born again they were born against.
At the beginning of every meeting you feel like calling on them for a word of criticism just to get it over with. Their favorite TV character was Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street. Their faces look like Lamentations. They always have that "I'm in pain"
look. Maybe it's the side effect of having an artificial heart.

Actually, I always try to be positive with my critics:
One came up to me last week and I said, "If I had two more just like you, I'd be a happy man." At first, he didn't know what to say. Then he replied, "Charles, what are you talking about? I'm always criticizing you. Why would you be happy if you had two more like me?" "Because I have twenty more like you. If only I had three, I would be a happy man!"

I wish the critics were more specific in their criticism, like: What kind of kite? What lake? Someone has said that any fool can criticize and condemn and complain, and most fools do. For every step forward, there is an equal and opposite criticism.

Many times as leaders, we feel like our organizational colors ought to be black and blue. In fact, all leaders are criticized. Lincoln and Washington, two of our greatest presidents, were the most criticized.
Churchill received a standing ovation and a lady commented how flattering it must be to receive that kind of applause. "Yes," he said, "but also know that if it were my hanging, the crowd would be twice the size."

Every great endeavor has its critics. When Robert Fulton first showed off his new invention, the steamboat, skeptics were crowded on the bank yelling, "It'll never start! It'll never start!" It did. It started with a lot of clanking and groaning. As the steamboat made it's way down the river the skeptics were quiet. For one minute. Then they started shouting, "It'll never stop! It'll never stop!

What do you do with your critics? Pray that they will fry in their own grease? What about setting clever traps for them, like the guy who was so upset because his critic was always poking him in the chest. He decided to wire dynamite to his chest so that the next time he poked him, he would go up in smoke. That's not a good idea. Remember that critics who try to whittle you down are only trying to reduce you to their size.
A critic is a legless man trying to teach track and field. Take the rocks thrown at you and build something. Don't be paranoid. Everybody's not out to get you. Don't quit going to football games because you think they are talking about you in the huddle.
There is no coat that will insulate you from criticism. Prepare for criticism. The greater the work, the greater the criticism. Remember you only get shot at when you are close to the target.

The best way to handle critics is to remember the canal. The builder of the Panama Canal was besieged with criticism. When asked how he was going to handle the critics, he said, "With the canal." Don't get sidetracked if you are on the right track. Stay positive. One football coach says when you are run out of town, go to the head of the line and look as though you are leading a parade. And of course you cannot make everyone happy.

A new arrival in heaven was surprised to see a suggestion box along Main Street. He turned to a more seasoned resident and asked, "If everybody is supposed to happy in heaven, why is there a suggestion box?"
The experienced tenant replied, "Because some people aren't really happy unless they complain."

P.S. Especially for Preachers -- Speaking of heaven, I believe that all of the critics will be in one big church and they will have to rotate criticizing each other. Why is that heaven? Because all of their former preachers will get to watch.

From a friend: TEN RULES OF HOUSEKEEPING

1. Vacuuming too often weakens the carpet fibers. Say this with a serious face, and shudder delicately whenever anyone mentions Carpet Fresh.

2. Dust bunnies cannot evolve into dust rhinos when disturbed. Rename the area under the couch "The Galapagos Islands" and claim an ecological exemption.

3. Layers of dirty film on windows and screens provide a helpful filter against harmful and aging rays from the sun. Call it an SPF factor of 5 and leave it alone.

4. Cobwebs artfully draped over lampshades reduces the glare from the bulb, thereby creating a romantic atmosphere. If your husband points out that the light fixtures need dusting, simply look affronted and exclaim, "What? And spoil the mood?"

5. In a pinch, you can always claim that the haphazard tower of unread magazines and newspapers next to your chair provides the valuable Feng Shui aspect of a tiger, thereby reducing your vulnerability. Roll your eyes when you say this.

6. Explain the mound of pet hair brushed up against the doorways by claiming you are collecting it there to use for stuffing handsewn play animals for underprivileged children.

7. If unexpected company is coming, pile everything unsightly into one room and close the door. As you show your guests through your tidy home, rattle the door knob vigorously, fake a growl and say, "I'd love you to see our Den, but Fluffy hates to be disturbed and the shots are SO expensive."

8. If dusting is REALLY out of control, simply place a showy urn on the coffee table and insist that "THIS is where Grandma wanted us to scatter her ashes..."

9. Don't bother repainting. Simply scribble lightly over a dirty wall with an assortment of crayons, and try to muster a glint of tears as you say, "Junior did this the week before that unspeakable accident... I haven't had the heart to clean it..."

10. Mix one-quarter cup pine-scented household cleaner with four cups of water in a spray bottle. Mist the air lightly. Leave dampened rags in conspicuous locations. Develop an exhausted look, throw yourself onto the couch, and sigh, "I clean and I clean and I still don't get anywhere..."
********************************
*Laws of Parenting*
1. The later you stay up, the earlier your child will wake up the next morning.
2. For a child to become clean, something else must become dirty.
3. Toys multiply to fill any space available.
4. The longer it takes you to make a meal, the less your child will like it.
5. Yours is always the only child who doesn't behave.
6. If the shoe fits...it's expensive.
7. The surest way to get something done is to tell a child not to do it.
8. The gooier the food, the more likely it is to end up on the carpet.
9. Backing the car out fo the driveway causes your child to have to go to the bathroom.

Next day, Rabbi Bloom called them into his office and asked them what was going on.
They immediately confessed to having given in to weakness and agreed that they deserved some form of punishment for their sin.
Rabbi Bloom thought a lot about this and then came up with the answer. He bought two bags of dried peas from the delicatessen and told them, "Put these in your shoes and walk on them for a week to remind yourselves how hard life can be when you turn away from God."
A few days later, the two students met each other in the street. One had a pronounced limp and had dark circles under his eyes. He looked very tired and weary. On the other hand, the other was the same as he had been before.
"Hey," said the first. "How is it that you are walking so easily? Why didn't you do as the Rabbi asked and put the peas in your shoes?"
"I did," said the other. "But I boiled them first."

Timmy was a little five year old boy that his Mom loved very much and, being a worrier, she was concerned about him walking to school when he started Kindergarten. She walked him to school the couple of days, but when he came home one day, he told his mother that he did not want her walking him to school everyday. He wanted to be like the "big boys." He protested loudly, so she had an idea of how to handle it.
She asked a neighbor, Mrs. Goodnest, if she would surreptitiously follow her son to school, at a distance behind him that he would not likely notice, but close enough to keep a watch on him.
Mrs. Goodnest said that since she was up early with her toddler anyway, it would be a good way for them to get some exercise as well so she agreed.
The next school day, Mrs. Goodnest and her little girl, Marcy, set out following behind Timmy as he walked to school with another neighbor boy he knew. She did this for the whole week. As the boys walked and chatted, kicking stones and twigs, the little friend of Timmy noticed that this same lady was following them as she seemed to do every day all week.
Finally, he said to Timmy, "Have you noticed that lady following us all week? Do you know her?"
Timmy nonchalantly replied, "Yea, I know who she is."
The little friend said, "Well who is she?"
"That's just Shirley Goodnest" Timmy said.
"Shirley Goodnest? Who on earth is she and why is she following us?"
"Well," Timmy explained, "every night my Mom makes me say the 23rd Psalm with my prayers cuz she worries about me so much. And in it, the prayer psalm says, "Shirley Goodnest and Marcy shall follow me all the days of my life." So I guess I'll just have to get used to it.

A husband and wife are getting ready for bed. The wife is standing in front of a full-length mirror taking a hard look at herself.

"You know, dear," she says, "I look in the mirror, and I see an old woman. My face is all wrinkled, my boobs are barely above my waist, and my butt is hanging out a mile.
I've got fat legs, and my arms are all flabby." She turns to her husband and says, "Tell me something positive to make me feel better about myself."

He studies hard for a moment thinking about it and then says in a soft, thoughtful voice, "Well, there's nothing wrong with your eyesight."

Services for the husband will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 at St. Anselm's Memorial Chapel.

Fred was unfortunate enough to be hit by a 10-ton truck and landed up in hospital in intensive care. His best friend Morris came to visit him.
Fred struggles to tell Morris, "My wife Sally visits me three times a day. She's so good to me. Every day, she reads to me at the bedside."
"What does she read?"
"My life insurance policy."

Mr. Greenberg was an illiterate immigrant, but he worked hard, saved his pennies, and started a small business. It did well, and soon he had enough money to send for the wife and children.
The work kept him very busy, so he never had time to learn to write, but the bank was happy to do business with him, even though his signature consisted of two O's.
He prospered, he opened more stores, the kids were transferred to private schools, the family moved into a fancy house (with one staircase going nowhere just for show), . . . you get the idea.
One day his banker, Mr. Smith, asked him to drop by.
"So vat's the problem?" Greenberg asked, a bit anxiously.
Smith waved a bunch of checks at him. "Perhaps nothing," he said, "but I wanted to be on the safe side. These recent checks of yours are all signed with 3 O's, but your signature of record has just 2."
Greenberg looked embarrassed. "I'm sorry about making trouble," he said, "but my vife said that since I'm now such a high-class rich guy, I should have a middle name!"
