Dating Dinosaur Bones

Some tourists in the Chicago Museum of Natural History are marveling
at the dinosaur bones. One of them asks the guard, "Can you tell me
how old the dinosaur bones are?"

The guard replies, "They are 3 million, four years, and six months old."

"That's an awfully exact number," says the tourist. "How do you know
their age so precisely?"

The guard answers, "Well, the dinosaur bones were three million years
old when I started working here, and that was four and a half years ago."

Zoo: Free admission for Mohawk haircuts

MELBOURNE, Fla. (UPI) -- A zoo in Melbourne, Fla., says visitors sporting Mohawks resembling the manes of Visayan warty pigs will get in free during Father's Day weekend.

The zoo said the promotion, aimed at publicizing the new Visayan warty pig exhibit that is to open June 14, will run in addition to a promotion offering free admission for dads on Father's Day, WKMG-TV in Orlando reported Monday.

Male Visayan warty pigs, which were originally native to six Philippine islands but are now found on only two, bear Mohawk-like manes that often grow to more than one foot in length and stand up vertically when the animals are agitated.

West Virginians offended by Cheney

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney joked about inbreeding in his family Monday and wound up having to apologize to the people of West Virginia.

Cheney, speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, noted his distant relationship with Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential contender from Illinois. He then said he had a grandmother whose last name was Tyler but was descended from a Cheney.

"So I had Cheneys on both sides of the family, and we don't even live in West Virginia," the vice president quipped.

While that drew laughs from the crowd, it didn't sit well with West Virginia leaders, who demanded, and got, an apology, The Charleston Gazette reported.

"I truly cannot believe that any vice president of the United States, regardless of their political affiliation, would make such a derogatory statement about my state or any state, for that matter," Gov. Joe Manchin said.

Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., said Cheney showed "contempt and astounding ignorance toward his own countrymen."

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., called it "exactly the type of stereotyping that we don't need from our elected officials."

Cheney's office extended an apology.

"The vice president's offhand comment was not meant to hurt anyone,'' Cheney spokeswoman Lea Anne McBride said. "On reflection, he concluded that it was an inappropriate attempt at humor that he should not have made. The vice president apologizes to the people of West Virginia for the inappropriate remark.''

Artist claims yeti scalp in Himalayas

OAKER, England (UPI) -- A British artist claims a sketch she made of a legendary yeti was based on alleged witness accounts and a scalp she saw at a Bhutan monastery in the Himalayas.

Polyanna Pickering said a monk old her the scalp, which is kept in a part of the monastery that is closed to visitors, is 100 years old and came from the mythical primate, The Daily Telegraph reported Monday.

"I was told this was from a Migoi -- their name for the yeti. All I know is, it was bigger than any human or ape scalp I have ever seen," Pickering said. "It had tufts of reddish-black fur coming out of it and was mounted on a pole and seen as a holy relic."

Pickering said she sketched the item and expanded on it after speaking with villagers.

"I was amazed when they told me of regular sightings, close encounters and even tales of people being carried off by the Migoi," she said. "Their descriptions were so detailed, I ended up doing this 'photo-fit' with them all sitting round telling me to alter this or how that should look."

Pickering's sketches will be displayed at her Oaker, England, gallery June 9.

The poll of 4,000 Britons, conducted by YouThinkYourBossIsBad.co.uk, found participants were also plagued by bad bosses named Steve, Paul, Alan, Catherine, Debbie and Linda, The Sun reported Monday.

Additionally, 51 percent of those polled said they have left a job in the past because of unpleasant superiors and 10 percent said they are on the verge of quitting their current job due to an unbearable boss.

Tricks for a Better Relationship

A man walked into a therapist's office looking very depressed. "Doc, you've got to help me. I can't go on like this."

"What's the problem?" the docotor inquired.

"Well, I'm 35 years old and I still have no luck with the ladies. No matter how hard I try, I just seem to scare them away."

"My friend, this is not a serious problem. You just need to work on your self-esteem. Each morning, I want you to get up and run to the bathroom mirror. Tell yourself that you are a good person, a fun person, and an attractive person. But say it with real conviction. Within a week you'll have women buzzing all around you."

The man seemed content with this advice and walked out of the office a bit excited. Three weeks later he returned with the same downtrodden expression on his face.

"Did my advice not work?" asked the doctor.

"It worked alright. For the past several weeks I've enjoyed some of the best moments in my life with the most fabulous looking women."

"So, what's your problem?"

"I don't have a problem," the man replied. "My wife does."

- He picks the jury by playing "duck-duck-goose."

- Every couple of minutes he yells, "I call Jack Daniels to the stand!" and proceeds to drink a shot.

- He frequently gives juror No. 4 the finger.

- Just before he says "Your Honor," he makes those little quotation marks in the air with his fingers.

- He giggles every time he hears the word "briefs."

Entries in a cat's journal:

DAY 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another house plant.

DAY 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair...must try this on their bed.

DAY 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was...Hmmm. Not working according to plan.

DAY 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time, however, it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid? My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.

DAY 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise. More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But I can wait; it is only a matter of time..

Eating 24 hot dogs earns man coveted spot

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (UPI) -- Erik Denmark, who ate 24 hot dogs and buns to earn a spot in a New York eating contest, says the competition was "most intense."

Denmark, 29, told The Kansas City Star he has played competitive sports, but never experienced anything like Saturday's qualifying event for the annual Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island.

"I grew up playing golf, tennis, a lot of individual sports," said the Seattle native. "Those 10 minutes are the most intense competition I've ever been involved in."

Chris Abatsas, who was beaten out by one hot dog in Saturday's competition, said he was intent on not letting his loss spoil his appetite.

"I'm probably going to enjoy a big fat steak here in a little while. I always do -- it's tradition," the 41-year-old native of Greece told the Star. "There's different compartments in the stomach -- one's for contests, one's for enjoyment, one's for pleasure."

Testicle Festival held for a good cause

WOODRUFF, Utah (UPI) -- The eighth annual Testicle Festival in Woodruff, Utah, has helped raised nearly $30,000 for charity by dispensing plenty of bull testicles, volunteers say.

Festival volunteer Lori Cornia said in addition to raising donations, the Black Gold Cattle Co. event served plenty of deep-fried bull testicles, also known as "Rocky Mountain Oysters," The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

"Some people have trouble with them," Cornia said. "Just think of it as veal."

The event, which had 250 pounds of the "Oysters" available for visitors, also included old-time rodeo events such as team branding and range bull riding.

Cornia said the festival was an annual chance for people to enjoy the food once seen as a rare treat by farmers' friends and family.

"It was considered a treat, since they only got it once a year," she told the Tribune. "Of course, you probably wouldn't want to eat it more than that."

Police seeking thong-headed bandits

ARVADA, Colo. (UPI) -- Two robbery suspects who allegedly committed their crimes wearing thongs on their heads are being sought in Arvada, Colo., police say.

Police spokeswoman Susan Medina said some people might laugh at the suspects wearing underwear on their heads, but it's not necessarily a laughing matter, Denver's KWGN-TV reported.

"You see these two guys wearing, basically, panties over their heads to disguise themselves," Medina said, referring to a surveillance video of the two men. "But the bottom line is: this is a serious crime."

The two men allegedly broke through the glass door of a convenience store May 16, hitting and robbing the clerk.

Medina told the TV station the suspects' motivation in choosing thongs for a disguise was questionable given the underwear's scant nature.

"There's a plethora of disguises out there: ski masks, character costumes," Medina said. "And, if you're going to wear underwear, certainly there are other kinds that would give you a little more coverage."

No slime for New Zealand ghost buster

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (UPI) -- A New Zealand engineer-turned-ghost buster says he is sometimes the scariest thing on site during paranormal investigations.

Modern day ghost buster Brad Scott founded NZ Paranormal to investigate the 10 percent of paranormal activities in the New Zealand capital Wellington that he says defy logic.

"Every so often we come across evidence that we just cannot explain," he told The Dominion Post.

Scott said he spent a frightening amount of money on high-tech equipment -- including voice recorders, video equipment and electromagnetic field, or EMF, detectors -- the New Zealand newspaper reported. Paranormal investigators say other-world entities emit a high electromagnetic field.

Investigators such as Scott typically associate so-called paranormal activity with humidity or broken electrical appliances as logical explanations of haunting.

"I don't have a proton pack," he said -- referring to the fictional nuclear accelerative machinery devised by the main characters in the 1984 film comedy, "Ghostbusters."

He did, however, say he experienced a high EMF reading during his interview for the story.

"That's strange," he said, as he stood next to a headstone.

A plane is enroute to Philadelphia, when a hunk of a fireman, sitting in Economy Class, gets up, moves into the First Class section of the plane, and sits down. A flight attendant watches all this happen and approaches the fireman. "May I please see your ticket?", asks the attendant.

The fireman lifts his head, removes his a sunglasses, looks at the attendant and replies, "I'm a fireman. I'm a hunk. I'm going to Philadelphia. And I'm staying right here."

Turning to the Co-Captain, he asks, "You say he's a fireman? I know how to handle this. My brother-law is a fireman so I know how to speak fireman."

Then Captain then goes back and approaches the fireman. He leans down, whispers something in his ear, and he immediately stands up from his seat, says "I'm so sorry", and heads back to his original seat in Economy Class.

The Co-Captain and attendant are amazed. They ask the Captain what he said to make him move without a fuss.

Preacher's Donkey

A man bought a donkey from a preacher. The preacher told the

man that this donkey had been trained in a very unique way

donkey go was to say, "Hallelujah!"

The only way to make the donkey stop was to say, "Amen!"

The man was pleased with his purchase and immediately got on

the animal to try out the preacher's instructions.

"Hallelujah!" shouted the man. The donkey began to trot.

"Amen!" shouted the man. The donkey stopped immediately.

"This is great!" said the man. With a "Hallelujah" he rode

off, very proud of his new purchase.

The man traveled for a long time through the mountains. As

he headed towards a cliff, he tried to remember the word to

make the donkey stop.

"Stop," said the man. "Halt!" he cried. The donkey just kept

going.

"Oh, no..."

"Bible...Church!...Please! Stop!!" shouted the man. The

donkey just began to trot faster. He was getting closer and

closer to the edge of the cliff.

Finally, in desperation, the man said a prayer: "Please,

dear Lord. Please make this donkey stop before I go off the

end of this mountain. In Jesus' name, AMEN."

The donkey came to an abrupt stop just one step from the

edge of the cliff.

"HALLELUJAH!" shouted the man.

Running out of ideas, she appealed to his patriotism and said, "Well, think of Robert E. Lee."

He replied, ''Who's Robert E. Lee?''

"Directions"

A friend was thinking about buying a new house in the country and asked me to come out and look at it. We found the town, but we couldn't locate the road. We drove over to city hall, where a community get-together was going on, and asked around, but no one had heard of the road. Even the policemen and fire personnel were stumped.

We went in to city hall and consulted a map, with no luck, until finally one young man came to our aid. He pointed to the map, showing us exactly how to get there. I thanked the young man and asked if he was with the police or fire department.

"Neither," he replied. "I deliver pizzas."

A Simple Explanation of Baseball

This is a game played by two teams, one out the other in. The one
that's in, sends players out one at a time, to see if they can get in
before they get out. If they get out before they get in, they come
in, but it doesn't count. If they get in before they get out it does count.

When the ones out get three outs from the ones in before they get in
without being out, the team that's out comes in and the team in goes
out to get those going in out before they get in without being out.

When both teams have been in and out nine times the game is over. The
team with the most in without being out before coming in wins unless
the ones in are equal. In which case, the last ones in go out to get
the ones in out before they get in without being out.

The game will end when each team has the same number of ins out but
one team has more in without being out before coming in

Woman, 101, renews driver's license

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (UPI) -- A 101-year-old Florida woman known as the oldest driver on the planet says people may be surprised she renewed her driver's license until 2011.

Lillian Cox began driving in 1915 and can still be seen putting around Tallahassee, Fla., in her 1984 sedan, WKMG-TV in Orlando reported Thursday.

"They're surprised that I'd get a driver's license at 101. But I have four more years," she said. "I'm sure I look (101 years old) but they don't let me know that."

Cox said, however, she wants to be driven to her upcoming appearance on "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" in a limousine.

Man survives crotch snake bite

CAIRNS, Australia (UPI) -- A man seemed embarrassed after a snake bit him in the crotch while he was relieving himself on the side of the road in Australia, an ambulance spokesman said.

The tourist could have lost his life when a poisonous brown snake lurched toward his crotch and sunk its teeth into his manhood, the Sun reported Thursday.

It was reported rescue officials hurried to the road near Cairns, Australia, and began on-site treatment.

Medical officials said the man was expected to recover, despite throwing up and complaining of a stomachache.

"It certainly had a swipe at him. But it didn't envenomate him. As it came through it must have got a bit of a shock," the spokesman said. "I think he was a bit shocked and embarrassed."

Party trashes $8.8 million home

MARBELLA, Spain (UPI) -- A woman says her $8.8 million home in Marbella, Spain, was trashed by 400 revelers who showed up for a party her daughter advertised on the Internet.

Amanda Hudson said she gave her daughter, Jodie, permission to throw her 16th birthday party at the house, but she lost control of the shindig after hundreds of people showed up to party, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.

Jodie Hudson had sent out word about her birthday bash on social networking sites Facebook and Bebo as the "party of the year," the British newspaper reported. The advertisements, which included the address of the house, promised "there's going be a lot of alcohol and an amazing DJ."

Hudson said $12,000 worth of jewelry and multiple clothing items were stolen during the party. Other items, including a TV, were thrown into the house's pool.

She said the house is usually rented out for $8,000 a week during the summer, but the damage done by the party has made the residence unlivable.

Not So Smart

The old Indian chief sat in his home on the reservation, smoking his ceremonial pipe, eyeing the two U.S. government officials sent to interview him.

"Chief Two Eagles," one official began, "you have observed the white man for many years. You have seen all his progress and all his problems." The chief nodded.

The official continued, "What do you think of all the white man has done?"

The chief stared at the officials for more than a minute, and then calmly replied, "When white man found the land, Indians were running it. No taxes. No debt. Plenty buffalo, plenty beaver. Medicine man free. Indian people hunted and fished all the time."

The chief paused, then added, "Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that."

"Wait a minute," the salesman says cautiously, "What's the catch?"

'Obama Sweet Potato' sells on eBay

BELMONT, N.C. (UPI) -- A Belmont, N.C., man sold a sweet potato on eBay Wednesday that he says resembles Democratic U.S. presidential contender Barack Obama.

The curious spud sold for $8.49 after only three bids.

Seller Wade Jones, whose eBay handle is howardrobardhughes, described the item as a "Sweet Potato that looks like future Prez Barack Obama."

He said in the item's description that he spotted the Illinois senator's face on the starch while talking politics in the grocery store.

"I was wearing my Obama 'Yes We Can' bracelet … when someone stopped me in front of the sweet potato bin, and asked me where I got my bracelet ... I then looked down, and saw 'The Barack Obama Sweet Potato' staring right back at me," the seller wrote.

Man impaled by branch to recover

MINNEAPOLIS (UPI) -- Minneapolis doctors said a 24-year-old man whose leg was impaled on an oak branch is expected to make a full recovery.

Doctors at Hennepin County Medical Center said that after three surgeries and physical therapy, Josh Skattum will have only a 2-foot-long scar on his leg to remember the branch, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Wednesday.

Trauma surgeon Dr. Jon Krook said the branch, which was almost 3 inches in diameter, missed Skattum's major artery and did not break any bones.

"If it hit that artery, he could have bled to death,'' Krook said.

Skattum said the branch impaled his leg while he was riding in a golf cart at dusk with his brother.

Woman warned for warning customers

CHEDDAR, England (UPI) -- A Cheddar, England, shopkeeper said police have threatened to arrest her if she continues to warn illegally parked customers that police are on their way.

Alma Floyd, 60, said she was told by police that she was interfering with officers "in their line of duty" when she warned customers that Police Community Support Officers were spotted ticketing cars in the area, The Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

She said they threatened to arrest her if she continues to give the warnings.

Floyd said she told customers when she saw officers in the area because she feared enforcement of parking laws could hurt business at her dairy shop.

"Ever since the new parking rules were introduced we have seen a slump in trade," she said. "The crackdown on parking on that pavement means passing motorists have nowhere to park, and they don't come in. So I've been looking out for them whenever they come near -- it's the only thing I can do."

Suspect's getaway foiled

ALBUQUERQUE (UPI) -- Authorities in Albuquerque said a burglary suspect who fled the home of a sheriff's sergeant was arrested after a panhandler saw his car and dialed 911.

Investigators said the suspect, Joseph Ballejos, 35, fled the sergeant's home in an SUV after the officer arrived home at 3 p.m. Tuesday, KRQE-TV, Albuquerque, reported Wednesday.

"(The sergeant) turned around and tried to stop the car: the car didn't stop, fled from the scene," sheriff's Sgt. Van Eldredge said. "The sergeant was concerned someone else might still back in his house, so he returned to his house."

Panhandler Jeffery McKnight said he called 911 after he saw the suspect first drive the wrong way on an Interstate 25 off ramp and then drive off the road. Deputies arrived in the area and arrested the suspect.

The Whole Truth
Little white lies to a robot...

Henry was a salesman's delight when it came to any kind of unusual gimmick, no matter what. The house was filled with electric potato peelers, self-rocking chairs, and other odd stuff. His wife Marsha had long ago given up trying to get him to stop being such a sucker for every new gadget that came along.

One day, Henry came home with another one of his unusual purchases. It was a robot – “but not just ANY robot,” Henry said. “This one is a LIE DETECTOR!”

At around 5:30 PM, their 11-year-old son, Little Johnny, came home – two hours later than he should have.
“Where have you been, young man?” Henry demanded. “Why are you so late getting home from school?”
“Charlie, Bobby and I went to the library to work on an extra-credit project for history class,” said Little Johnny.
The robot strode around the table and slapped Little Johnny, knocking him completely out of his chair.

A startled Little Johnny climbed back onto his chair.
“Son,” said Henry, “This robot is a sophisticated lie detector, and it knows when you’re telling the truth. Let’s try again. Where did you really go after school?”
“We went to Bobby's house and watched a movie,” said Little Johnny.
The robot stood there.

“What movie did you watch?” asked Marsha.
“The Ten Commandments,” answered Little Johnny.
The robot charged around the table and smacked Little Johnny to the floor once more.

With his lip quivering, Little Johnny got up, sat down and said, “I’m sorry I lied. We really watched a movie called Sex Kittens of New Orleans.”

“I'm ashamed of you, son,” said Henry. “When I was your age, I never, ever lied to my parents about anything. I always told them the truth.”
At that, the robot wheeled across the room to Henry and delivered a whack that nearly laid him flat.

Marsha doubled over in laughter, almost in tears, and said, “Boy, did you ever ask for that one! You can't blame Little Johnny for lying. You did it too, and after all, he is your son!”
The robot immediately scooted over to Marsha and knocked her cold.
